Broadway star Andy Karl returns to the striped suit for the Capitol Theatre season, with tickets on sale now.
Say his name three times if you must. Beetlejuice is coming to Sydney.
Michael Cassel Group, Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures and Langley Park Productions have confirmed that Beetlejuice the Musical, the eight-time Tony Award-nominated hit that has been haunting audiences across the country — will conclude its Australian national tour at the Capitol Theatre, Sydney, from November 2026. Tickets are on sale now at beetlejuicethemusical.com.au.
The Sydney season marks the final stop of a tour that takes in Brisbane’s Lyric Theatre at QPAC from 7 June, Crown Theatre Perth from August, and the Festival Theatre at Adelaide Festival Centre from October. Sydney gets the last word — and for a show this theatrical, that feels entirely appropriate.
What Is Beetlejuice the Musical?
For anyone who needs the refresher: Beetlejuice the Musical is based on Tim Burton’s beloved 1988 Academy Award-winning film and tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a strange and unusual teenager with a healthy obsession with the whole “being dead thing.” When her new house turns out to be haunted by a recently deceased couple and a degenerate demon with a thing for stripes, Lydia enlists the ghost-with-the-most to scare away her insufferable parents. What follows involves exorcism, a terrified girl scout, and a whole (nether)world of pandemonium.
In other words: exactly what Sydney audiences deserve.
Andy Karl Returns as Beetlejuice
Broadway star Andy Karl, best known for his work in Groundhog Day, Rocky the Musical, Pretty Woman the Musical and Moulin Rouge!, reprises his role as the titular ghost for the Australian tour. Karl launched the international run with a gala premiere at Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena earlier this year and has been inside the black-and-white striped suit ever since.
“Getting to step into the black-and-white striped suit is always a thrill,” Karl said of the Sydney announcement, “and I’m so excited to finally do it for Sydney audiences. Knowing this city will be the final stop on our Australian tour makes it even more special.”
An Australian Score at Its Heart
One of the more satisfying details of this production is that its musical DNA is, in part, deeply local. The show’s music and lyrics were written by Eddie Perfect, Melbourne-born, Tony Award-nominated, and one of Australian theatre’s most distinctive voices. Perfect’s score earned him a nomination at the 74th Tony Awards, and his fingerprints are all over a show that somehow manages to be anarchic, hilarious and genuinely moving at the same time.
“Sydney is a city that embraces big ideas and bold theatrical experiences,” Perfect said. “Beetlejuice is unapologetically outrageous, packed with heart, spectacle, and a healthy dose of anarchic comedy, and I know Sydney audiences will fall in love with this gloriously twisted world.”
The Creative Team
The production is directed by two-time Tony Award-winner Alex Timbers, whose credits include the original Broadway production of Moulin Rouge! The book is by Scott Brown and Emmy Award-nominee Anthony King (Broad City), with choreography by Connor Gallagher and music supervision, orchestrations and incidental music by Kris Kukul.
The design team is about as decorated as it gets:
- Scenic design: David Korins (Hamilton) — two-time Tony Award-nominee
- Costumes: William Ivey Long (The Producers) — six-time Tony Award-winner
- Lighting: Kenneth Posner (Kinky Boots) — Tony Award-winner
- Sound: Peter Hylenski (Frozen) — four-time Tony Award-nominee
- Projections: Peter Nigrini (Dear Evan Hansen) — Drama Desk Award-winner
- Puppet design: Michael Curry (The Lion King) — Drama Desk Award-winner
- Special effects: Jeremy Chernick (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child)
In short: this is a production built to be unforgettable, by people who have built some of the most unforgettable shows of the last two decades.
